“Danger, danger, Will Robinson!
That is what the robot (from my childhood television years) would say today about kids posting their personal information at www.myspace.com. I recently had a parent show me their kid’s “myspace” area. It was quite revealing. Unfortunately, students often do not perceive the danger they place themselves and others in when they post pictures and text. If you’d like to find someone, just start with the city they live in. Eventually you’ll be able to follow the bread-crumbs of friends to people you know.
Students need to be informed about the dangers and ways to protect themselves on these type of web sites. But it shouldn’t stop there. Parents need to look at the content their children post or discourage its use completely. Many schools have banned access to this web site and sent home letters of concern.
