Teacher Uses Online Translator for Student
by
Jonathan Sumner
on Wed 10 Oct 2007 12:49 PM EDT
We have a new Russian student at our school who doesn’t speak any English. He couldn’t understand how to login to the computer with his user name and password. His teacher, Mrs. Smith tried writing things down on paper accompanied by a lot of pointing, but that didn’t help either. Then she thought about using an online translator. She went to http://babelfish.altavista.com/ and typed in the message. She printed off the translation and took it to her student. Immediately his eyes lit up and he nodded his head. Mission accomplished! more »

Thanks for the initiation…by the way, this is my first experience with blogging—hope to actually have something interesting and useful to post in future blogs. COPPA VS COPA
by
richardcarey
on Wed 01 Nov 2006 05:55 PM EST
COPPA is very different from COPA. COPA was an attempt to force
pornography sites from displaying any offensive images on their home
pages, and it was struck down as unconstitutional.
COPPA on the other hand is designed to protect the identity and other
private information of students online. While there is an exception for
non-profits, they must have an exception under the FTC Act. (Not all
non-profits fall under this category) Since there is an increasing
awareness of privacy and a higher expectation of security, it is wise
to adopt as many of these standards as is possible in order ... more »

Fog Creek Copilot...Amazing Remote Assistance
by
Jonathan Sumner
on Wed 30 Aug 2006 04:51 PM EDT
Over the years I’ve tried all sorts of software that allow you to remotely control someone elses computer. Usually it is a big hassle. Today it is even worse with firewalls, closed ports, and port forwarding. Not any more! Fog Creek has developed a web interface called Copilot that is fast, secure, and very easy to use. You can try it out free for two minutes at www.copilot.com. At first I thought the price of $9.95 for 24 hours was a bit steep, but I got over that pretty fast. I didn’t even get a headache trying to use it.... more »

Students Take Evolution Fight to Class
by
richardcarey
on Tue 11 Apr 2006 04:19 PM PDT
Two decades of political and legal maneuvering on evolution has spilled over into public schools, and biology teachers are struggling to respond. Loyal to the accounts they've learned in church, students are taking it upon themselves to wedge creationism into the classroom, sometimes with snide comments, but also with sophisticated questions -- and a fervent faith.
As sophomore Daniel Read put it: "I'm going to say as much about God as I can in school, even if the teachers can't." more »
